Clams & Beer Festival
Food & Beer Culture
What do people eat with beer in Qingdao? Clams, especially the small Venus clams known locally as gala. The most famous dish is spicy stir-fried gala with chili, served straight from the wok into a bowl and washed down with draft beer. Shandong cuisine, known as Lu cuisine, favors seafood, salt, and bold seasoning.
It's the salt and the heat that really bring out the light beer's character. The lager cleanses the palate and cools it down without competing aromas getting in the way. This is how it's enjoyed in Qingdao well into the evening, at plastic tables in front of food stalls or along one of the city's piers, such as Zhanqiao Pier.
Beer Street runs along Dengzhou Lu, starting right at the old brewery grounds where the Tsingtao Brewery Museum now stands. It stretches just under a kilometer and houses more than 60 bars and beer shops, supplied daily with draft beer straight from the plant. This is where you'll see the beer bags most often.
In summer, the city celebrates the Qingdao International Beer Festival. It was first held in June 1991 in Zhongshan Park, marking the city's 100th anniversary, organized jointly by the brewery and the city government. Today it spreads across several venues, including the Laoshan district, the beach at Huangdao, and the Shibei district.
The festival is loud, with stages, music, and long rows of tables. Anyone attending should know it's much like any other major beer festival: people drink a lot, so the usual precautions apply—water, food, and a safe way home.
