Herbstfest and Tavern
Food & Beer Culture
What is the Herbstfest Erding? A folk festival running ten days starting the last Friday in August, with its 84th edition in 2026 taking place from August 28 to September 6. According to organizers, more than 200,000 visitors attend each year. There are two large tents, one run by Fischer's Stiftungsbrauerei and the Weißbräuzelt.
In the tent, no Seidla is served, but a liter in a stoneware or glass mug, and people clink glasses without banging them too hard.
Weißwurst belongs with Weißbier. It's traditionally eaten in the morning, with sweet mustard and a pretzel, and it's either slurped from the casing or sliced, but never eaten with the skin on. The Weißbier, with its fruitiness and soft carbonation, cuts through the mild sausage.
The menu also includes Obatzda, Leberkäse, and roast pork with dumplings. Obatzda is a mix of cheese, butter, onion, and paprika, and its bold cheese flavor stands up well to the beer's sweetness. With roast chicken, the banana notes pair nicely with the browned skin.
In this region, the tavern remains the heart of the village. Those with a table stay seated, and the beer comes to them. Weißbier here isn't a special-occasion drink but an everyday one, showing up from midday snacks to Sunday dinners.
Herbstfest also features brass bands and fairground rides, and for many the evening ends with a late walk home. Anyone driving orders something non-alcoholic beforehand. The festival is a meeting point for the town and surrounding area, not a drinking contest.
