Round & Earthy
Tasting
A good potato vodka from the region barely smells of the tuber itself. Instead, a subtle note of cooked grain lingers in the background, along with a light, creamy sweetness. When tasting, hold the glass briefly under your nose before drinking at all. Often the full texture only reveals itself on the second sip.
Luksusowa, whose potatoes, according to the producer, come from Wielkopolska and Pomerania, shows this round, almost oily body especially clearly. It tastes mild at first, with a soft, slightly sweet finish. It's well suited for tasting the difference from a grain vodka directly.
Wyborowa, whose name and story began in Poznań in 1823, is by contrast usually distilled from rye. It tastes leaner, drier, and a touch sharper on the tongue. Both bottles carry the name of the same city, yet represent two different raw materials and flavor profiles. This side-by-side comparison makes the region a reliable reference point.
For tasting, a small, narrow glass suffices, chilled but not so icy that the tongue goes numb and stops tasting anything. Take a short sip, hold it briefly in the mouth, then swallow. The aftertaste reveals more than a hasty knock-back.
Between two styles, a neutral bite, some white bread or a cucumber slice, helps reset the palate. This makes it easier to clearly distinguish between the heavier potato and the leaner rye from the same city. This very comparison shows just how strongly the raw material shapes the character.
