What do people eat with beer in Brussels? The classic is mussels with fries, known in Belgian French as moules-frites. Sweet mussels and salty fries stand up against the acidity of a Gueuze or a dry Blond. There's also Lapin à la Gueuze, rabbit braised in Gueuze, with the acidity tenderizing the meat. Served alongside are fries from the corner frituur, eaten with mayonnaise the Brussels way, plus bread for soaking up the broth.

Cheese pairs well too: fresh white cheese with radishes and bread is a Brussels snack typically enjoyed with Lambic. The beer cuts through the milky flavor.

The cafés tell more than the menus do. À la Mort Subite opened under that name in 1928 on the Rue Montagne-aux-Herbes Potagères. The name comes from the dice game Pitjesbak, whose final decisive round is called “Mort Subite,” meaning sudden death.

At the Delirium Café in the Impasse de la Fidélité, the Guinness Book of Records recorded 2,004 different beers on January 9, 2004. The venue takes its name from the beer Delirium Tremens, brewed by Huyghe, whose pink elephant hangs above the entrance.

Since September 2023, Belgian Beer World has showcased Belgian beer culture inside the Bourse on the Grand-Place. UNESCO's 2016 recognition specifically highlighted the brown bars and beer clubs. The Bourse, the Grand-Place, and Manneken Pis are all just a few minutes' walk apart, and the Gueuze brewery Cantillon in Anderlecht is a short train ride away.
