Cask & Climate in the region Michoacán: Charanda

Oak in the Highlands

Cask & Climate

Part of Charanda production is never aged: the white spirit is bottled as Blanco shortly after distillation. Other bottlings rest in casks. Mexican trade media mention oak, roble or encino in Spanish, and describe how the spirit turns amber there. The names Reposado and Añejo, as some houses call their aged lines, are familiar, though minimum ageing times depend on the standard and on each individual house.

It's not possible to generalize about common cask sizes or prior fills for the region. This is worth keeping in mind when a bottle advertises woody notes: vanilla and spice come from the cask, not from the cane, and the smaller the cask, the faster the wood releases them.

The climate differs from that of seaside rum-producing regions. According to the decree, the protected zone lies at roughly 1,600 to 3,842 meters, with an average regional temperature of 21.2 degrees Celsius. In tropical warehouses, trade press reports annual evaporation often around eight percent, many times that of Scotland. A cooler highland warehouse loses less, and the wood works more slowly. No concrete evaporation figures for Uruapan have been documented.

How an age statement should be read on bottles sold in the EU is governed by Regulation 2019/787: it applies to the youngest component in the blend. If a Charanda bottle bears a number that doesn't clearly read as years, it's worth checking the label or asking the importer. Reposado and Añejo are trade terms used by producers, not fixed tiers like VSOP for Martinique.
