VO, VSOP, XO, Hors d'Âge: age tiers in Rhum agricole

Tiers of the AOC

VO, VSOP, XO, Hors d'Âge: age tiers in Rhum agricole

In Rhum agricole from Martinique, VO, VSOP, and XO are regulated age tiers: VO means at least three years, VSOP at least four, and XO at least six years in oak casks under 650 liters. Hors d'Âge sits at the same level as XO. On rum without such regulation, these abbreviations are often just marketing.

The age tiers of AOC Martinique at a glance

AOC Rhum de la Martinique, the sole controlled designation of origin for rum since 1996, classifies its rums by time spent in wood. At the bottom sits Rhum blanc. It rests in tank for at least six weeks after distillation and is bottled colorless.

Above that stands Rhum élevé sous bois, aged under wood. It requires at least twelve months in oak, with cask size left open. It may not carry age-related terms, including the word vieux. Only Rhum vieux requires at least three years in oak casks under 650 liters, and it must be bottled on Martinique.

Within the vieux class there are further tiers. VO stands for at least three years. VSOP, Réserve Spéciale, Cuvée Spéciale, and Très Vieux require at least four years. XO, Extra Vieux, Grande Réserve, and Hors d'Âge require at least six years. In each case, the minimum period must be spent in cask without interruption.

What VO, VSOP, and XO mean for rum

These abbreviations come from the Cognac trade with England. VO stands for Very Old, VSOP for Very Superior Old Pale, and XO for Extra Old. Hors d'Âge translates roughly from French as beyond age, meaning very old. Martinique adopted these familiar terms and attached its own minimum periods to them.

Beyond time, the AOC also sets requirements for content. A Rhum vieux must contain at least 325 grams of volatile compounds per hectoliter of pure alcohol. These are aromatic compounds such as esters, acids, and higher alcohols. A blanc must reach at least 225 grams, and an élevé sous bois 250. This rule thus safeguards character alongside age.

Coloring is also limited. Caramel coloring, wood extract, and sugar combined may lower the apparent alcohol content by less than two percent. This ensures that an XO from Martinique remains a rum whose color and depth come largely from the cask.

Rhum XO versus Cognac XO: same letters, different years

Anyone familiar with Cognac might assume XO signals a higher age. In Cognac, XO has required at least ten years since 2018, up from six previously. There, VS stands for at least two years, VSOP for at least four. In Rhum agricole from Martinique, by contrast, XO sits at six years.

The comparison is imperfect, though, since the climates differ so much. A rum aged six years in small casks in the Caribbean has often absorbed as much wood influence as a spirit that matured far longer in a cool cellar in the Charente. The figures, then, are their own standards, not a direct conversion.

VSOP and XO on rum from other countries

Outside AOC Martinique, VSOP and XO are marketing terms for rum with no uniform standard. An XO from the Dominican Republic, Panama, or Mauritius might contain rum aged four, eight, or twenty years in the blend. What's meant is up to the producer alone, unless a national rule applies.

The other French overseas rums from Guadeloupe, Réunion, and Guyane carry a g.A. designation rather than an AOC. Their rules also distinguish blanc and vieux, as well as, in some cases, élevé sous bois or brown rum. For Rum da Madeira, the aged tier is called envelhecido, requiring at least three years in oak. Anyone encountering VSOP or XO there is best off checking the minimum period with the producer.

A reliable supplement within the EU is an age statement in years. If an XO also carries a number with the word Years, it applies to the youngest component. Without it, the abbreviation alone tells you little.

Quick comparison

Rhum vieux VO
AOC Martinique: at least three years in oak casks under 650 liters, without interruption, bottled on the island.
Élevé sous bois
At least twelve months in oak casks of any size; may carry neither the vieux designation nor an age statement.
Cognac XO
Since 2018, at least ten years; for Rhum agricole from Martinique, six years suffice for XO.
XO Without AOC
A trade term with no minimum age requirement; only meaningful when accompanied by a number of years on the label.
