The short answer
A good Untappd alternative takes over your check-ins including ratings and notes, so you do not start from zero. Untappd provides two files for this: a CSV file with your check-ins and a JSON file with your lists. You upload both to Gustofolio, and your ratings feed straight into your taste profile.

Why people look for an Untappd alternative
For many beer drinkers, Untappd is the diary of recent years. Over time some want something else: a stock they can manage, recommendations based on their own taste rather than popularity, or an app with room for wine, whisky and gin too.
Anyone who switches wants one thing above all: not to lose hundreds of check-ins. That is why the import is the most important question for any alternative.
What a good alternative should do
Check these points before you switch.

- Import check-ins with rating and notes
- Merge several check-ins of the same beer into one entry
- Take over your lists, as stock or wishlist
- Assign breweries and beer styles correctly
- Learn your taste and explain its recommendations
- Handle other drinks besides beer
- Let you export everything again
How to get your data out of Untappd
Untappd has two routes. The beer history has an export for which, according to Untappd's help pages, you need the Untappd Insider subscription. For the move to Gustofolio you take the second route: the copy of your data in the settings.
As a user in the EU you have a right to a copy of your data under the General Data Protection Regulation, and this copy is free of charge for you.
- Sign in at untappd.com, ideally on a computer
- Click your profile picture at the top right, then Settings
- At the very bottom, under Export Your Data, click Request Data Export
- Untappd emails you two links: a CSV file with your check-ins and a JSON file with your lists
- Download both files and select them in Gustofolio at the same time
What Gustofolio does with the files
Several check-ins of the same beer become one entry with your most recent rating and all notes. Your flavor tags are mapped to up to six aromas, and every beer gets its brewery.
You assign your lists before importing: lists with quantities become stock, wishlists become your wishlist, and what you do not need you leave out. Before the start you see a preview. A second import creates no duplicates, and a rating you have already written in Gustofolio is never overwritten.
Limits of the move
Images do not come along, only data. One import holds up to 10,000 rows; if you have more, split it. Rows that cannot be read are skipped with their line number instead of being guessed.
After the move: recommendations based on your taste
Your ratings take effect immediately: Gustofolio then knows the styles and aromas you like and suggests beers in that direction, with the reason. You rate new beers with stars or points and note what you liked and what you did not.
If you are looking for beer tastings, you will find them under Meet & Taste. And if you also drink wine or whisky, those bottles sit in the same collection.
Frequently asked questions about an Untappd alternative
These questions almost always come up before switching.
Do I need Untappd Insider for the move?
Untappd requires the subscription for the export in the beer history. For the move to Gustofolio you need the data copy in the settings; in the EU you are entitled to it free of charge under the GDPR.
Will my check-ins get lost?
No. All check-ins with rating and notes come along; each beer becomes one entry with your most recent rating.
Can I keep using Untappd?
Yes. You can export and import again later; beers that are already there are not created twice.
